This classic Verdelho has had around 10 years of ageing in warm conditions in the wine lodge. So expect a medium brown colour with lots of heated, nutty aromas with dried grape and fig notes. Verdelho based Madeiras are also a bit sweeter than the ‘dry’ Special style. So the palate is medium-sweet with the bracing acidity for which Madeira is famous combined with lots of sweet and savoury nutty notes. This is a complex Madeira made with one of the ‘noble varieties’ that is all too easy to enjoy!

H.M. Borges was founded in 1877 by Henrique Menezes Borges, who devoted his entire life to searching for premium wines produced on the Island of Madeira. Today the firm is one of the oldest producers and exporters of wine in Madeira, and is currently managed by two of Henrique’s great-granddaughters.

The Borges wine lodge is located in central Funchal and is well worth visiting with its friendly tasting room. In addition to tasting a fine selection of locally produced wines, there are a number of wine making artefacts and delightful wall paintings illustrating how Madeira was once made. Also, hanging on the wall, is a letter from Winston Churchill thanking the Borges family for the wines they sent him!
