This wine is composed of 100% Barbera grapes. Barbera is a dark-skinned wine grape variety found in several Italian wine regions, including its native Piedmont. It is also now grown further afield, including Argentina, Australia and California. The grapes used in this wine are grown in Barbera d’Alba; a key DOC of Piedmont, north-western Italy, famed for its tangy, cherry-like red wines made from Barbera grapes.
Barbera (like so many Italian wine grape varieties) has ancient origins, although it has only been traceably documented since the 17th century. It was first cited in an official document in 1798. Barbera-based wines were well regarded even then, for their rustic yet generous character. They were a favorite among Savoyard army officers, who considered the wine a “sincere companion”, which helped them maintain their courage in battle.
While drinking this wine you will see in the glass a red violet colour, and on the nose, notes of cherry and blueberry. The juicy fruitiness of the wine combined with a balanced acidity makes this a fresh and very pleasant red, enjoy!
