This wine has the wonderful name of Bull’s Blood (or ’Egri Bikaver’ as it is known in Hungarian) because of its lovely dark, deep colour. Don’t worry: there is no blood in the wine! The attractive deep ruby colour comes from a blend of 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Kekfrankos, 20% Merlot, 17% Sarah, 13% Kardaka, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Pinot Noir.

This Bull’s Blood has lovely black cherry, cassis and plum fruit on the nose and complex aromas from maturation in oak for a long period of time (think cinnamon, clove, vanilla and spiced tea aromas). Because this wine is also from 2013, it has developed beautifully adding some mature leather, mushroom and black tea characters to the nose and palate. Like a bull, it also offers a full body with lots of tannin, structure and a rich finish from its well-balanced high alcohol. A wonderfully complex expression of this Hungarian classic wine presented here in a modern, fruit-driven style with careful maturation in oak.

This wine is produced by a fascinating collective of top Hungarian producers known as Árpád. The name Árpád reminds Hungarians of Árpád Haraszthy, a pioneering winemaker who, together with his father Agoston Haraszthy, made important contributions to winemaking in the United States in the 19th Century.

The producers who make up the Árpád collective make wines in various colours and styles from lively, aromatic dry whites to the famous sweet white Tokaji Aszù and modern red wines with exciting flavours and textures in regions as diverse as Villàny, Eger, Somló, Szekszárd and the aforementioned Tokaji. Hungarian wine has come a long way since the industry was re-born in the 1990s and these are among the country’s very top producers.
